Consumer Alert: 2 Overlooked Nutritional Benefits Of Organically Grown Herbs

Much confusion still exists about the benefits of eating organically. Going beyond pesticide residues, Dr. Michael E Rosenbaum explains why organically grown herbs and foods offer better nutrition than conventionally grown produce.

TORRANCE, Calif. - Dec. 10, 2013 - PRLog -- Most of the discussion about the advantages of organically-grown food centers around pesticides. Indeed, organic crops have less pesticide, herbicide and fungicide residues than conventional crops.

But the health advantages of organically grown herbs and food go far deeper. Farming in partnership with the complex chemistry of plants and soil – the method used by organic farmers - may yield the best nutrition ever.

“Let’s take the expression, ‘you are what you eat’. Most of us understand that what we eat changes the chemistry of our bodies,” explains Dr. Michael E. Rosenbaum, MD, holistic health pioneer. “Talk to any organic farmer and you soon learn that the same thing holds true for plants. Plants’ nutritional value starts with the soil they’re grown in. And more and more research demonstrates that the conventional, non-organic fertilizers most crops are grown with are actually robbing us of good nutrition.”

In 2004, researchers at the University of Texas published a landmark study in the Journal of American College of Nutrition. They looked at 43 different fruits and vegetables, comparing nutritional data collected in 1950 and 1999. The fruits and vegetables eaten today were consistently lower than the ones from half a century ago in protein, calcium, phosphorus, iron, vitamin B2 and vitamin C levels.

While a number of factors contribute to this decline, the researchers pointed to declining soil chemistry as a major part of the problem.

Well-tended organic soil is teaming with helpful microbes, held together by a complex web of sophisticated chemistry. Synthetic fertilizers can't match this. When this lynchpin of organic agriculture is added to soil, it makes the soil a distinctively rich environment for plants to eat and grow.

“While soil makes a difference, the use of pesticides and fungicides do too – but not only for the reason most people think,” points out Dr. Rosenbaum. “Organically-grown herbs and foods tend to have more antioxidants and other special nutrients. Without the protection of pesticides or fungicides, organically-grown plants have to produce their own internal defensive chemistry like antioxidants. When we eat these plants, we end up benefiting from these special nutrients in keeping our bodies healthy as well.”

For example one study showed that organic peaches had at least 129% more antioxidants than conventionally grown peaches. And organically grown pears had as much as 315% more antioxidants than their conventional counterparts.

Organic farmers help out a little with natural, organically approved sprays. But their main defensive maneuver against plant disease is to build plants’ own health and internal defenses. By providing nourishing soil and good cultivation methods, they try to create the best environment for growing healthy, strong plants.

And when these plants are strong enough to defend themselves, they also produce high levels of compounds humans can use to defend themselves.

“The implications of these studies extend to herbs used therapeutically as well,” concludes Dr. Rosenbaum. “Many of the powerful herbs I recommend have developed special compounds thanks to the tough environments they grow in. For example, take the powerful adaptogenic herb, eleuthero. Researchers have linked its ability to help us deal with stress to the special chemistry eleuthero developed to survive the ice age and thrive in Siberia’s harsh climate. While I’m not aware of studies comparing organic eleuthero to conventionally grown eleuthero, I suspect that herbs grown organically may have higher concentration of these special compounds, too.”
