In a hair transplant surgery, the donor site is the back of the scalp from where the hair follicles are extracted to be transplanted into the patient’s bald or recipient area.

LONDON - Dec. 10, 2013 - PRLog -- For a hair transplant surgery, the patient’s own hair is used to cover the balding appearance. Hair transplant  surgery is certainly not magic to grow hair on bald scalp it only distributes the baldness resistant hair with some artistic patterns into a well settled and permanent coverage of the bald scalp.

And the hair of the patient that is resistant to baldness and is chosen to be transplanted to the bald areas of the scalp, is called the donor hair and the area that the hair is taken is the donor site/ area. The donor site is typically the back of the scalp of the patient, however, with modern technologies donor hair can also be extracted from legs, arms, chest, beard and all other baldness resistant hair bearing areas of the patient. The donor site is the same but the way of extracting them, differs between and FUT and FUE. Follicular Unit Transplantation is the modern version of the strip harvesting process that is the basic procedure of hair transplantation London. In the way that a long strip of skin is surgically removed taking from end of the back of the scalp to the other end. The length; breadth and width of the skin strip is determined depending of the patient’s scalp elasticity, donor hair density and quality; the requirement of the recipient site. Once removed the skin is put under a stereo microscope to find that the skin strip will contain thousands of hair follicular units. Hair grows in hair follicular units in 2-6closely packed hairs that are plucked by specialized super fine forceps and other instruments along with a little skin fat surrounding the hair follicles. A whole follicular unit bound in the skin fat all together is called a hair graft.  Closing the donor area after a strip harvesting is that the upper and lower ends of the wound are bound together and that is why the scalp elasticity depends on how much pulling can be allowed without tension.  There two types of suturing methods to close the wound.

After removing the donor area, the edges are closed and approximate the hairs again. This way ultimate camouflage of the resulting scar can be possible. Biodegradable surgical sutures are the widely chosen suturing method. It is more comfortable for the patient as stitches will not need to be removed in the post-operative period.

The appearance after a FUT hair transplant surgery, even with wet hair, should be normal and will not have a section that is noticeably hairless. The scar in the donor area generally is thin and imperceptible already at the end of surgery, because we bring the hairs together again, not allowing for areas with hair missing. The scar can always be easily hidden under the hair, even short hair.
