Dec. 9, 2013 - PRLog -- United Kingdom – Human rights violations and poor quality care are an everyday occurrence in mental health facilities in many countries, with many patients being exposed to physical, sexual and emotional abuse.

Tuesday 10 December marks the 20th anniversary of Human Rights Day. To mark this occasion, Emerald Group Publishing is offering free access to a special issue of the Journal of Public Mental Health, which focuses upon the human rights of people who experience mental illnesses. Developed in collaboration with the World Health Organisation's (WHO) mental health policy team, the issue, entitled ‘Mental Health and Human Rights: Special edition on WHO's QualityRights framework’ is free to read until 31st December 2014 by visiting http://www.emeraldinsight.com/tk/humanrights and using the following details to log in: username: humanrights password: emerald2013

Guest edited by Lee Knifton from the University of Strathclyde, and Michelle Karen Funk and Natalie Drew, both from the WHO policy team, the special issue of the Journal of Public Mental Health is provocative and challenging, whilst providing practical ideas to advance equalities in mental health. It underscores some of the enormous challenges faced by people with mental disabilities in countries around the world, whilst highlighting that efforts are underway to end violations and promote human rights and quality care.

In an opening commentary, Funk and Drew challenge the deep-seated social stigmas attached to mental illness and the public and institutional discrimination that ensues. They then go on to describe the process for developing the WHO QualityRights approach, which aims to empower service users, promote recovery-oriented practices, shape human rights in public policies and healthcare, and embolden social reform movements.

The special issue is made up of three case studies which explore human rights issues for mental health patients around the globe, and three powerful research papers. These papers expose the world-wide abuse of children in mental health institutions, make a case for a new global model of public mental health based on the notion of health citizenship, and examine the role of mental health service users/survivors in the process of human rights research.

‘Mental Health and Human Rights: Special edition on WHO's QualityRights framework’ is published as volume 12, issue 4 of the Journal of Public Mental Health. Published by Emerald Group Publishing, the journal provides a forum for dissemination and debate on all aspects of public mental health. It aims to develop the theory underpinning public mental health, and expand our knowledge of best practice in mental health promotion. For more information visit www.emeraldinsight.com/jpmh.htm
