All About the American Turnaround

Dec. 6, 2013 - PRLog -- Business Book Summary of American Turnaround

EBSCO Publishing has just released a new book summary. The government bailout of General Motors (GM) was pivotal in stopping the bleeding from the 2008 financial crisis that caused the collapse of big banks and hurt corporate America and the people who worked for those corporations. If GM did not make a comeback, the symbol of a country that “makes things” would be dead, said President Obama when he announced that the government would save GM by providing it with $50 billion in capital and taking over a significant stake of its ownership. In American Turnaround, Ed Whitacre, who was asked by the White House to become GM chairman and later became its CEO, outlines the problems that led to GM’s faltering and its journey to pick itself up. Whitacre also details his own journey, which offers insight into why he was the right choice to save GM.

Whitacre offers readers the following advice:

·         Taking care of people should be a top priority. Managers who threaten employees with firings will not see results. Those who are inspired and enthused about their jobs—not living in fear every day—will produce.

·         Management is fully responsible for what happens to a business. Other reasons that managers give for problems that arise—such as the economy or missed deadlines—are excuses.

·         Employees want to feel they are contributing. People have a need to feel they did something good, something that makes them proud. Managers often lose sight of this human element in managing and treat people like a commodity.

·         People are the number one asset of any business. Employees are the ones who should be credited for keeping a company on track.

·         The only way to make progress in business is to change. Those who only play defense will lose.

·         Management has to look out for the business’s long-term health. Managers need to think in terms of years, not quarters.

In addition to a 7-10 page summary of the book, each Business Book Summary includes a Key Concepts section that outlines the main points of the book, an About the Author section that informs readers of the author’s background as well as their additional written works, and a Features of the Book Section that explains the special features found within the book.
