Professor Lorenza Colzato of Leiden University in The Netherlands conducted a study of volunteers who engaged in regular exercise compared with a group who lead a more sedentary lifestyle.  Those who engaged in regular activity such as a walk, jog, bike ride, or exercise class tested higher and performed better on a series of cognitive creativity exams than those who were sedentary.

“Anecdotal literature suggests that creative people sometimes use bodily movement to overcome mental blocks,” advised Colzato when explaining the reason for his research.  It turns out that stimulating the body also helps stimulate the brain to perform better as well.

“We think that physical movement is good for the ability to think flexibly,” he continued.  “But only if the body is used to being active.”  So while the creative juices might not flow right away, sticking with an exercise regimen can help improve creative thought in the long-term as well as overall wellness.
