By: Destination Chesterfield The praise came at an exclusive Invest in Chesterfield event which was hosted by Chesterfield MP Toby Perkins in Westminster recently. The event, which was organised by Destination Chesterfield, was designed to showcase the town to potential investors and property developers, highlighting the town’s opportunities and future growth potential. Toby Perkins MP commented: “Chesterfield is a fantastic destination for business investment. Our town centre in particular has so much to offer businesses. Retail occupancy has actually risen during the recession and has one of the lowest vacancy rates in the country. This is supported both by large high street names like Debenhams, TK Maxx and Hobby Craft, but also be a thriving traditional market square – one of the largest in the country – and an historic Market Hall which has just received a £4million refurbishment.” Since launching the town’s marketing campaign in September 2010, against the backdrop of a cool financial climate, Chesterfield has shown growth across the board and bucked the national trend for declining high streets with its shop vacancy rate having halved to 7.7% since its peak in 2010. Most recently, Chesterfield was announced as the only town north of the Watford Gap to be in the top 10 of best performing centres with the least vacant shops. Chesterfield is also home to one of the largest Regeneration and Renewal schemes, the 16 hectare £340 million Waterside development. It is ranked at number 47 in the top 100 list of the UK's largest regeneration projects and is already being hailed as an exciting example of best practice regeneration, taking a largely vacant area centre and creating a vibrant new environment of buildings and open spaces. Work on the site commences in early 2014. Toby added: “Our event in Parliament was a great success and showcased these opportunities to business leaders from across the UK. Crucially, it also demonstrates the political support for Destination Chesterfield, with other local MPs, the Council and Shadow Business Secretary Chuka Umunna, all in attendance to support the event.” Funding for Destination Chesterfield has been secured from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), Chesterfield Borough Council and the local business community until December 2015, ensuring the marketing campaign’s on-going success.
