Dec. 2, 2013 - PRLog -- Business Book Summary of Building Resilience for Success

EBSCO Publishing has just released a new book summary. Although resilience is a word often used to describe a personal trait, organizations as a whole can reap the benefits of creating an environment that encourages and cultivates resilience development in employees. In order to achieve this, people must first understand the individual aspects and situational factors that affect their ability to be resilient, or not, in the face of pressure and adversity. From this understanding stems a realization that resilience development is an individual endeavor, but certain approaches and interventions can be applied to foster resilience building. Ultimately, by taking the steps necessary to promote and protect resiliency within its workforce, an organization can increase efficiency, strengthen employee engagement, and improve individual well-being on the road to greater success.

In Building Resilience for Success, Cary Cooper and Jill Flint-Taylor explain that:

·         Central to a broad definition of resilience is the belief that individual characteristics underpin the trait. The Five-Factor Model (FFM) of personality can then be used to define, measure, and draw conclusions about these individualities.

·         Looking at individual characteristics outside of the context of real-world situations does not provide a complete picture. Examining stressors and sources of pressure, in this case at work (the situation) provides valuable insight into resilience and its development.

·         Once a reactive program of support, resiliency training has transformed conceptually from an admittance of weakness to a more generally accepted strength of personal development in the face of challenging economic and social pressures.

·         Personality traits, mindsets, and emotions are developed over the course of years. Therefore, individuals must accept personal responsibility for resilience development in order to reap enduring benefits.

·         Building resilience can be achieved by focusing on and drawing from four personal resources: confidence, purposefulness, adaptability, and social support.

·         The role of managers and organizations is to facilitate an environment that encourages and allows for personal resilience development. Ultimately, individuals must still accept responsibility for improving their own resilience.

·         A more resilient workforce equipped to handle daily stressors and pressure equates to increased efficiency, effective management, and greater overall organizational success.

In addition to a 7-10 page summary of the book, each Business Book Summary includes a Key Concepts section that outlines the main points of the book, an About the Author section that informs readers of the author’s background as well as their additional written works, and a Features of the Book Section that explains the special features found within the book.
