Seminar Focuses on Protection vs. Self Defense

Launching "Protection & Situation Awareness in the Use of Force" seminar

OKLAHOMA CITY - Dec. 2, 2013 - PRLog -- Most  self defense courses are martial arts or gun classes.  A new seminar is emphasizing a different approach, protection.   Protection differs from self defense in that it is preventive, whereas self defense is reactionary.

Seminar designer and President of EIP Educational Services, LLC Vic Vogel explains why this seminar is the first step you should take before you enroll in self defense courses, "Most people think about courses like martial arts training or gun courses when they think about protecting themselves.  In reality self defense becomes necessary when you haven't taken steps to protect yourself, you don't use the protection steps you created, or you are caught by surprise by some unpredictable incident.  Most people who offer self defense courses will focus on the fact you are engaged with your invader or attacker.  Certainly if you are at this point it is important for you to be skilled in whatever self defense technique you choose to defend yourself.  However, what is missing from these course is the protection side of the equation.  This is understandable because self defense courses make money on teaching people how to react during close combat encounters. If you can avoid a self defense situation it is better than confronting your invader or attacker.  There are so many unknown variables at the point where you have to employ self defense.  Your attacker may be highly skilled in martial arts, or carrying a firearm.  There may be multiple attackers.  You could be caught off guard which does not allow you to bring your self defense skills into play. Protection strategy can't provide you a 100% guarantee that you won't be attacked, it can however lower the odds greatly."  Vogel believes that you have to have both a protection strategy and self defense skills in a security equation, but differs from most training courses in that he emphasizes Protection before Self Defense.

The "use of force" segment in the seminar places the participant in a video simulated lethal situation using a laser gun that simulates an automatic handgun.  This portion is conducted privately with a professional law enforcement officer who provides awareness feedback to the participant.  Participants quickly realize the difficulty in making decisions within one or two seconds, with minimal information, and reacting to a surprise invasion or attack. During the Use of Force section of the seminar participants usually have what Vic Vogel calls a wake up call.  This is  where they realize how difficult and dangerous self defense situations can be for them.  After completing the use of force simulation, students truly understand the importance of avoiding a self defense encounter by designing and implementing a solid protection strategy.

Vic Vogel expressed the importance of knowing how you will react in a lethal encounter, "I think many people overestimate how they will react in a surprise self defense encounter.  Recently a police officer from a city within Oklahoma City's community was charged with manslaughter after shooting a suspect running away.  This officer had several successful years as a law enforcement officer, and was a ranking officer on the police department's staff.  If this officer made a mistake resulting from a self defense situation, and was a trained professional, what chance do you think the everyday citizen has in a lethal self defense encounter. Most people have never encountered a deadly force situation and have no idea what will be required of them."  This new seminar is unique because it encompasses both protection and self defense awareness.

Each seminar is four hours long and is limited to 10 participants to ensure quality interaction with the instructors and participation with other students.  Interested individuals can find the content and cost for the seminar at https://Protection-UseofForce.com and can also enroll for the course on the website.  Vic Vogel said he can be reached for any questions about the seminar or enrollment at 405-308-0258 or email him at Vic@Protection-UseofForce.com.
