Everything Pays Off: The Covz to Release Debut EP on Dec. 6 at Cranknstein

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Dec. 1, 2013 - PRLog -- When artists of any medium put everything on the line for their art, the act alone does not guarantee success. But the experience of The Covz might seem to indicate otherwise. This indie-rock band from northern Colorado, which will release its debut EP on Dec. 6, is composed of four talented musicians who each put their version of everything on the line to propel the band to success. That risk paid off for lead singer and guitarist Ian Schroff, bassist Adam Ulissey, guitarist Johnathan Gleason, and drummer Josiah Schroff. The band will celebrate the release of the EP at 9 p.m. on Dec. 6 at Cranknstein, 215A N. College Ave. in Fort Collins.

The EP was recorded at Morningwood Studios; Producer Kevin Brookfield says working with The Covz was “terrific”: “Their passion and energy for their songs literally leaked into the mics and onto the tape, making my job easy.”

Before playing to crowded rooms in venues across northern Colorado, each member of The Covz actually lived in a different city—Ulissey in Dallas; Ian in Fort Collins; Gleason in Riverside, CA; Josiah in Austin. In the end, it’s the music that brought them together. Having lived in southern California all of his life, Gleason took a trip in the summer of 2011 to hike the famous Maroon Bells Four Pass Loop with the Schroff brothers. Josiah had just returned from Austin, fresh on the heels of a break-up. The three took up their instruments, played some covers, and, as naturally as anything, started writing their own music. And it was then that Gleason decided to drop everything in California and move to Fort Collins to pursue a music career—no job, no place to live, and no family in Colorado except the Schroff’s.

Meanwhile, Ian was prolifically writing new music—so fast that even he couldn’t keep up with it. He was a sophomore Engineering major at CSU when he decided to take a year off from school to pursue being the primary songwriter, lead guitarist, and lead vocalist as the full-time job that it is. His older brother, Josiah, took the risk then of switching from primarily playing piano to playing the drums and harmonica. Everything was coming together—except a bassist.

During the torrential downpours that flooded northern Colorado two months ago, Ulissey was walking down South Howes and stopped as he heard what could only be a jam session. Having recently moved from Dallas, Ulissey had been searching for dedicated musicians to play music with—but none seemed a good fit for this bassist. Standing outside the Schroff and Gleason house on Howes, getting soaked by the rain, Ulissey knocked on the door and asked if they needed a bassist. Yes, they did.

Two months of back-to-back shows later, The Covz recorded the EP, of which Producer Brookfield says, “In the recording process, the love, respect, and patience they showed one another as well as me in trying to capture their art (always fun but seldom easy) made it truly enjoyable.” In addition to playing at Cranknstein, The Covz have been headliners at Odell Brewing, Mainline, Mo Jeaux’s, Wild Boar, and the Pourhouse, and have been featured twice on KCSU.
