ORANGE COUNTY, Calif. - Nov. 25, 2013 - PRLog -- ORANGE COUNTY, CA – November 22, 2013 – This excellent book titled, “How to Plant a Vegetable Garden” was written by author Elizabeth Whitehouse who wanted to educated people on the benefits of growing your own vegetables.  In the first chapter she states, “Although chemicals, in the form of pharmaceuticals, can be life-savers, they have no place in or on food. By growing your own vegetables, you are able to control what goes into and on to them.”  She then says, “The first time you pluck a ripe tomato from the vine and pop it into your mouth, you will be amazed.  You will feel sure that there has been a mistake because this delicious, juicy fruit that you have just eaten cannot possibly go by the same name as that bland, watery insipid red thing sold in supermarkets as a tomato.”

The first step in planting your vegetable garden is to prepare the soil.  Whitehouse says, “It is almost certain that your soil will need to be improved, which doesn’t happen overnight.  The best time to start preparing your vegetable garden is in the fall when you should add as much organic matter to the soil as possible.”  Just as preparing soil is important, knowing where to plant is too.  Whitehouse states, “The kitchen is the ideal place to grow sprouts year round.  A sunny windowsill is the perfect place for a small winter herb garden, right at your fingertips.”

The next step that should be taken is choosing which plants you need to grow.  The author explains, “This is not difficult: you plant what you like to eat.  Unfortunately, we can’t grow hotdogs or pizza.  So, sometimes, we need to learn to like what we are able to grow.”  She continues by giving details about several plants and gives instructions on growing them as well as tips on what to do with your plants.  Crops that are mentioned include celery, spinach, collards, kale, cabbage, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, and herbs.
