Acupuncturist Sheryl Hongsermeier Discusses CAM With Aviad Haramati

Why is Complementary, Alternative and Integrative Medicine (CAM) essential for training health professionals.

PHOENIX - Nov. 25, 2013 - PRLog -- Aviad “Adi” Haramati, PhD, is Professor of Integrative Physiology in the Department of Biochemistry, Molecular & Cellular Biology, Director of the Center for Innovation and Leadership in Education (CENTILE), and co-director of the CAM Graduate Program at Georgetown University Medical Center. Dr. Haramati will be joining Sheryl Hongsermeier on an episode of her show, “Sticking To The Point,” Natural Medicine Radio on VoiceAmerica. The episode airs December 3rd at 8 a.m. PST and can be viewed any time after that by going to the VoiceAmerica website and selecting the link to the show (http://www.voiceamerica.com/episode/73779/9000-needles-documentary-follow-up-with-director-doug-dearth-and-dr-atzuki-maeda).

On the show, Hongsermeier and her guest will discuss CAM and focus on Haramati’s research to incorporate knowledge, skills and attitudes about CAM and integrative medicine into the medical school curriculum. Dr. Haramati seeks to improve medical education across the globe, especially with regard to the intersection of science, mind-body medicine and professionalism and has been a visiting professor at over 60 medical schools. Honsermeier and Haramati will explore the outcomes from a novel  mind-body medicine program for medical school students and faculty that is designed to foster self-awareness, and the potential implications for the general population.

As the founding Vice-Chair of the Consortium of Academic Health Centers for Integrative Medicine, Dr. Haramati chaired several of the Consortium’s International Congresses on Integrative Medicine and Health –and the upcoming Congress to be held in May 2014 in Miami, which will showcase the best science in the field of complementary and integrative medicine.

Dr. Haramati led a broad NIH-funded educational initiative aimed at incorporating complementary, alternative (CAM) and integrative medicine into the medical curriculum at Georgetown, and currently co-directs the graduate studies in Physiology—CAM program.  The goal of the initiative is not to train practitioners of CAM, but rather to educate skillful, knowledgeable physicians and scientists who understand the role of CAM in healthcare and able to discuss these issues with their patients.
