Honda Reveals the All-New 2015 Civic Type R

Honda has revived the high-performance variant of its Civic hatchback, which is expected to deliver over 280 hp.

HIGHLAND, Ind. - Nov. 25, 2013 - PRLog -- Not many drivers associate the practical Honda Civic with high-speed thrills, but the upcoming 2015 Civic Type R is looking to change that. With a newly developed turbo engine, exclusive aerodynamic upgrades, and a host of other high-end performance gear, this hot hatch will undoubtedly become a popular choice for drivers looking for a compact car with plenty of zip.

The Civic Type R is much sleeker and sportier than the Civic that American drivers are used to. It’s based on the European hatchback model, and features both front and rear spoilers that add to the athletic look. The pre-production model is painted a bold matte black, but it isn’t clear whether that will be an available option for the production version. Large, powerful Brembo brakes are visible behind the Civic’s stylish five-spoke alloy wheels.

Under the hood, the 2015 Civic Type R features an all-new turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder VTEC engine. In developing this new engine, Honda has focused on minimizing friction to make the combustion process as streamlined as possible. While this engine is obviously optimized for speed, it will likely be quite fuel efficient as well.

Reviewers who have gotten to take the new Civic Type R for a test drive have been thoroughly impressed. For a car as small and light as the Civic, an engine that delivers nearly 300 hp offers plenty of power. Honda has also worked to make the handling and steering as precise as possible.

Unfortunately for American drivers, the new Civic Type R probably won’t be coming to Honda dealerships on this side of the Atlantic. The European Civic, which the new Type R is based on, is an entirely different beast from the American version, and untested in these markets. While American drivers have begun to warm up to hatchbacks thanks to their unmatched versatility and efficiency, the Honda Fit will likely be the only hatchback in Honda’s lineup for many years to come. In Europe, the Type R will probably sell for just over €20,000, around $30,000.
