The Town of Lake was created in 1838 as one of Milwaukee County’s seven townships. Its borders were Greenfield Avenue (north), College Avenue (south), Twenty-seventh Street (west) and Lake Michigan (east). Beginning in 1850 and ending in 1954, Lake passed out of existence piecemeal as its farmland was developed. Portions were claimed by the City of Milwaukee or incorporated to become Bay View, Cudahy and St. Francis. Images of America: Milwaukee’s Town of Lake combines vintage images with a compact history of the area beginning with the Native American Indians who first inhabited the land. The book includes stories and images that will educate and amuse residents and visitors alike. Highlights of Milwaukee’s Town of Lake include: •The founding of Bay View as the company town for the Milwaukee Iron Company and the founding of Cudahy as the company town for Patrick Cudahy’s meat packing company. •The St. Francis Seminary, founded in 1845, was the Midwest’s first seminary, and the third oldest existing seminary in the US. •The forgotten stories of New Coeln, a once thriving community along Howell Avenue.
