Follow on Google News | Galactic Glam! Olympian University Cosmetology School Wins Hair CompetitionRoswell Cosmetology Students Win Big with COSMIC-tologists Entry
Taking advantage of Roswell’s pop culture phenomenon with UFOs, cosmetology students Dadrian Chaves, Paris Saragosa, Brittany Harris and MacKenzie Whitcamp created a cosmic space theme that incorporated cosmetology and aliens. The students started by creating a space-themed backdrop with planets and an outer space salon, complete with a little green alien to represent inter-galactic customers, a blinged-out blow dryer, scissors, comb, roller and everything you would normally see or use in a salon. However, the real show-stopper was the transformation of Whitcomb who served as the model for the cosmic creation. Chaves mostly concentrated her efforts on the makeup, but all three worked on the costume and futuristic couture hair style with vibrant colors of fuchsia, orange, purples and navy blues. In addition to the effervescent hues, the tresses showcased intricate twists and braids, as well as pom poms and puffs to build up the hair style. “The girls worked very well together and put in a lot of hard work,” said Kristi Eaton, phase II instructor at the award-winning cosmetology school. “Our Roswell school always placed well in the past years. This year the competition was fierce and many students and staff wondered if the Roswell students would win again. When they announced our school won first place the students knew all their hard work paid off. We are extremely proud of all our students and look forward to helping them blast off into successful careers after graduating from Olympian University in Roswell.” There were three categories at the Educational Forum: a competition for a Bridal Mannequin, a Fantasy Mannequin, as well as a three-person team event. In the three person team competition students were told to pull out the stops and create an original, themed entry that incorporated hair and makeup that would wow the judges, spectators and fellow students. Each entry was judged based on creativity, originality, innovation, color and theme. Olympian University and its sister schools ITS Academy of Beauty, International Academy of Hair Design and Hair Benders Academy provides students with a distinguished environment that mirrors many of the upscale salons that will employ the cosmetology students after they graduate and earn their cosmetology license. According to a U.S. News and World Report hairdresser is cited as one of the best jobs of 2012. In a March 21, 2012 article in USA Today, beauty salon sales grew 5.4 %.4 in the last two years vs. a 2.3% sales increase in 2009. With the Bureau of Labor Statistics projections of 15.7% employment growth expected by 2020, the future of hair salons and the future of hair stylists should continue to grow.
