Zip Aviation Gives Thanks a Year After Hurricane Sandy Strikes

By: Zip Aviation

NEW YORK - Nov. 22, 2013 - PRLog -- (New York, NY)  - Many businesses in Downtown Manhattan were devastated by Hurricane Sandy last fall, and among those was the leading helicopter tour and charter provider, Zip Aviation.  In November 2012, it was announced that the heliport would close following water damage inside the building.   The first floor of the building, where Zip Aviation's heavy passenger traffic flows, was immediately rendered uninhabitable.  Zip Aviation's regular helicopter tour business resumed from the exterior of the facility just one week after the storm from a temporary truck in the parking lot.  It then became apparent that the remediation and reconstruction effort would span multiple months.  On April 24, 2013, the Downtown Manhattan Heliport re-opened after a 6-month rebuild of the facilities.  The heliport served as a critical emergency response hub in the immediate aftermath of the storm.  Multiple airlifts were conducted sending thousands of pounds of supplies to Staten Island.  The Eastern Region Helicopter Council also volunteered to provide helicopter flights to government officials and first responders.  A celebratory reception commemorating the reopening and unveiling of the new heliport facilities took place on April 25, 2013.  "The heliport provided necessary hurricane relief to those suffering more than us.  We are proud to have been part of that reconstruction effort and are excited to see tourism business resuming to normal levels," said Zip Aviation's chief pilot and founder, Itai Shoshani.  Zip Aviation employs over 100 individuals and conducts tour reservations off-site.  By virtue of rapid response and reconfiguration, all Zip Aviation employees kept their jobs and tour bookings continued.  Five helicopter tour companies operating out of the Downtown Manhattan Heliport generate nearly $40M annually in economic output, making them essential to the growth of tourism in New York City.  As of November 2013, Zip Aviation's passenger count has reached and exceeded the passenger counts flown prior to Hurricane Sandy.  On November 27, 2013, Zip Aviation employees will gather to give thanks a year later.
