Nov. 22, 2013 - PRLog -- The newest addition to Arcadia Publishing’s Images of America series is Brookwood Hillsfrom local authors Betsy Crosby and Elaine Luxemburger with a foreword by Ed Helms. The book boasts more than 200 vintage and modern images chronicling the growth and change of this Atlanta community.

Affluent homeowners in the early 20th century made a stretch of Peachtree Street, named “Brookwood” after society doyenne Emma Thompson’s country mansion, one of Atlanta’s most elegant neighborhoods. Today, Brookwood Hills, which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, is a leafy enclave of 350 homes within the city of Atlanta. Visitors call it an urban oasis; to city planners, it is a premier example of traditional neighborhood design.

To the generations of families who have grown up in its homes, played at its park and pool, joined its clubs and fought its battles, Brookwood Hills is something much more—it is their hometown. Images of America: Brookwood Hills shares the history of this unique community through a collection of rare, vintage images.

Highlights of Brookwood Hills include:

•Information on how the first shots of the Battle of Peach Tree Creek on July 20, 1864 were fired in Brookwood Hills and how the narrow Union victory, helped to ensue Lincoln’s re-election.
•Images of Brookwood Station, the last remaining train station in Atlanta, and Neel Reid, the renowned architect who designed the station.
•Famous residents of Brookwood Hills such as choral director Robert Shaw, best-selling author Pat Conroy, designer Vern Yip, actor Ed Helms and James Beard award-winning Chef Linton Hopkins.
