MIAMI - Nov. 21, 2013 - PRLog -- South Miami Hospital’s Center for Women & Infants (http://baptisthealth.net/en/facilities/south-miami-hospital/pages/center-for-women-infants.aspx) is the first hospital in Florida and the second in the country to earn two maternity-related Joint Commission Gold Seals of Approval at the same time: one for pre-term labor (http://baptisthealth.net/en/facilities/south-miami-hospital/maternity/pages/default.aspx) and one for prematurity (http://baptisthealth.net/en/facilities/south-miami-hospital/maternity/pages/neonatal-intensive-care-unit.aspx). Among U.S. hospitals, South Miami Hospital is the sixth to be certified for preterm labor and ninth to be certified for prematurity.

The Center for Women & Infants also has achieved accreditation as a Center of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Gynecology (COEMIG) by the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists (AAGL (http://www.aagl.org/)), the leading association promoting minimally invasive gynecologic surgery (http://baptisthealth.net/en/facilities/south-miami-hospit...) among surgeons worldwide.

“These nationally recognized marks of excellence demonstrate the Center for Women & Infants’ commitment to providing the highest level of quality care,” said Lincoln Mendez, CEO of South Miami Hospital. “Our Center’s entire team and hospital Board chairman and members are to be commended for these outstanding achievements.”

The Gold Seals of Approval from The Joint Commission (http://www.jointcommission.org/achievethegoldseal.aspx) demonstrate that the Center for Women & Infants meets rigorous national standards. Joint Commission reviewers conducted a comprehensive on-site evaluation of the Center’s compliance with standards of care specific to the needs of pre-term labor and prematurity patients. The disease-specific care certification is awarded for two years and addresses five core areas: program management, clinical care, supporting self-management, clinical information management and performance measurement.

Leading The Joint Commission certification efforts along with nurses, administration and support staff at South Miami Hospital’s Center for Women & Infants were physician leaders Jorge Perez, M.D., Dibe Martin, M.D., Jorge Gomez, M.D., and Rene Paez, M.D.

The COEMIG designation recognizes surgeons, hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers around the world that provide minimally invasive gynecologic surgical care on an inpatient and outpatient basis. Facilities designated as Centers of Excellence are recognized for having the most effective diagnostic and therapeutic techniques and providing less invasive treatments for gynecologic conditions through the integration of clinical practice, research and innovation.

Physicians who championed COEMIG designation efforts include Ricardo Estape, M.D., Scott Dunkin, M.D., Troy Gatcliffe, M.D., Nicholas Lambrou, M.D., Armando Hernandez-Rey, M.D., and Rafael Perez, M.D.

“These honors help reinforce the Center’s role as a national and international leader in healthcare innovation in women and infant services,” said Denise Woods, R.N., vice president of South Miami Hospital’s Center for Women & Infants. “They also validate our dedication to providing advanced care for our patients. I am extremely proud of our highly-skilled physicians, staff and maternity, neonatal and surgery teams.”

Each year, more than 4,200 babies are born at South Miami Hospital’s Center for Women & Infants.

In addition to labor and delivery, the Center’s highly skilled doctors, specialists and nurses provide an array of services for women and infants, including specialized maternal-fetal care for high-risk pregnancies and unborn babies; minimally-invasive robotic surgery and fibroid and cancer treatment; pelvic health and incontinence testing and therapy; infertility and reproductive medicine; a Child Development Center to evaluate and treat infants and children as they grow and develop; cosmetic, breast reconstruction and weight-loss surgery; radiation therapy; and diagnostic imaging, including digital mammography and PET/CT scans to detect breast and other cancer, fetal MRI to detect problems in unborn babies, ultrasound, coronary artery imaging and bone density testing.  The Center also is home to one of the area’s largest Level II and III neonatal intensive care units, where highly specialized teams care for premature or sick newborns.
