It would be a time of turmoil for modern man. Soon, the tendrils of global war would envelop the European continent—including the entire Mediterranean region.

For the recently married Anna and Franco Gennusa, hope would become their greatest ally against the ravages of the coming Great Conflict.

As their love flourished so did their family, and soon, they would reap a most fulfilling reward—six beautiful daughters.

Anna’s days would be occupied with an ongoing struggle to raise her girls in the sun-ripened Sicilian countryside, while her husband, Franco, worked the local olive groves from sunrise to sunset.

But devastation and suffering would quickly become commonplace throughout the region. Soon, the Gennusa’s village would become a den of sadness and sorrow—a time of grief that would leave lasting emotional and physical scars.

Facing a desperate situation, and fighting for his family’s future, Franco soon finds peace in a new dream—the journey of a lifetime—a trip across the ocean to New York City where they hoped to rebuild their lives in a new land…a new home.

But the sacrifice may be more than any of them can bear.

“Author Mary B. Patterson crafts an indelible tapestry of history, and a monumental legacy to those who sought freedom in a new land,”said Kathie McGuire, director of Brighton Publishing LLC. “Franco and Anna Gennusa: Their Journey offers a lasting memorial to the Gennusa family and the challenges they faced—and overcame—during a time of worldwide transition.”

Mary B. (Gennusa) Patterson was born in the rural village of Bisacquino, on the island of Sicily. She came to America as a small child and grew up in Enfield, Connecticut. Raised in an ethnic Italian family, Ms. Patterson’s parents said she was, “always old enough to get married, but never old enough to date.” Attempting to fit into society, Ms. Patterson constantly found creative ways to balance her ethnic home and American backyard life. After meeting her soon-to-be husband and dating for three weeks, they were married, and together raised three terrific boys in Crofton, Maryland.
