Follow on Google News | Historic Randolph-Lucas Mansion Completes Journey Down Peachtree Road to New Home in Ansley ParkAt precisely 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, November 8th, the historic Randolph-Lucas house began its journey down Peachtree Road, a feat two years in the making for owners Christopher Jones and Roger Smith.
And in spite of the chilly temperatures, a few hundred curious and enthusiastic Atlantans lined Peachtree, watching the mansion tediously make its way towards its new home. The structure had been meticulously split into two halves between floors, with the pieces reaching their final home of 78 Peachtree Circle at 7:35 a.m. Saturday morning. Even though the Randolph–Lucas mansion has reached its final destination, the project is four-to-six months away from completion for Jones and Smith. Jones, who holds a BFA in Historic Preservation from the Savannah College of Art & Design, and Smith are determined to restore the home back to its original 1924 appearance. The home was originally designed for Hollins Nicholas Randolph, a prominent Atlanta attorney, by the celebrated Marye, the architect for such Atlanta landmarks as the Fox Theatre, the demolished Beaux-Arts-influenced Atlanta Train Terminal, and religious institutions such as St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. “The Randolph-Lucas house captures a period of time when mansions lined Peachtree Street,” stated Jones. “It is our hope that by preserving this piece of Atlanta’s architectural and cultural history, that this project will be an inspiration to others interested in preserving significant pieces of Atlanta culture.” The Randolph-Lucas house was designated a local landmark by the City of Atlanta and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
