"Gathering" holiday show at Pleiades Gallery

DURHAM, N.C. - Nov. 20, 2013 - PRLog -- Pleiades Gallery presents "Gathering"

November 20, 2013 – January 5, 2014
Third Friday Reception: Friday, December 20, 6-9 pm

“Gathering” is a collection of visual stories, told through diverse artistic media, about our associations with the winter holiday season. The show embraces the textures, layers, and varied truths about gatherings -- from warm, ritualistic, and celebratory to a sense of loneliness and cold. Pleiades artists share their stories through visions of sugar plums, family relationships, golden leaves and a waxing moon, and numerous tree metaphors that hint at family connections, encounters, and barriers.

Saba Barnard’s painting, “American Desi,” celebrates the joy between a mother and daughter amidst swirls of pinks, browns, and gold-leaf. Saba remarks, “[Gathering] makes me think of family and connection, and this painting is inspired by that connection.”

Emily Cox offers breathing space and an opportunity for gathering around the hearth and Thanksgiving table with colorful ceramic botanical vases and centerpieces. Emily’s artwork often depicts natural motifs reminiscent of her upbringing in Louisiana such as egrets, songbirds, and bees.

Sandra Elliott’s triptych is a quieter, more reflective take on the meaning of “Gathering.” In gentle greys, creams, browns, and blues, her impressionistic paintings of tree clusters hint at encounters and connections.

Kim Wheaton portrays a darker view of the winter holiday season. Entitled, “Homecoming,” her mixed media painting in textured dark blues, black and metallic bronze, is of Canada geese flying in the moonlight over bare winter trees.

In addition to the Gathering show, Pleiades is filled with remarkable jewelry, paintings, sculpture, and prints created by the 10 local artists who run the gallery. Please come by to meet us and see our new work. The Pleiades artists are: Jim Adams, Saba Barnard, Calvin Brett, Emily Cox, Sandra Elliott, Jim Lee, Renee Leverty, Jena Matzen,  Darius Quarles, and Kim Wheaton.

“Gathering” will be on exhibit at Pleiades Gallery from November 20, 2013 until January 5, 2014. There will be an artists’ reception on the Third Friday of December (12/20) from 6-9 pm.  Starting December 1st, gallery hours will change: open Tues – Thurs from 12 – 7pm, Fri- Sat from 12 – 8 pm, and closed Sun-Mon. Other hours can be arranged by appointment.
