TriState Pain Institute Providers Promote Safe Use of Narcotic Medication

Nov. 20, 2013 - PRLog -- November 2013: In 2010, Vicodin was the most prescribed medication in the U.S., with roughly 131 million prescriptions filled.  On October 25, 2013, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced there would be stricter restrictions on hydrocodone products such as Vicodin. Within the year, hydrocodone products and oxycodone products will be under the same Schedule II restrictions. Under Schedule II rules, a doctor must hand write a prescription, and can only do so for up to a 3-month supply of the medication.

According to the FDA, their determination came after vigilant analysis and recommendations from patients, healthcare providers, outside experts, and government entities. By early December, the FDA hopes to have the formal recommendation package delivered to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).  The FDA, along with medical professionals nationwide, hope these restrictions will help reduce abuse and diversion of medications, which can place public safety at risk when not taken or managed properly.

Dr. Benjamin Venger, Dr. Charles Stevens, and all at the TriState Pain Institute follow FDA guidelines in an effort to ensure patient safety and quality of their care programs. By offering interventional treatment programs, genetic testing for drug metabolism, and by prescribing non-addicting medication alternatives, the TriState Pain Institute provides other treatment options to controlled substances such as Vicodin. Furthermore, educating the patient into the risks and benefits of any medication or category of drug provides insight into rational and realistic patient expectations.

Stricter accountability for medication management may ultimately result in less abuse. However these measures do not replace a rational foundation for prescribing pain medications:  (1) establishing an accurate diagnosis; (2) developing a plan of care focused on the titration of medications to their lowest denominator; (3) determining the ability of the body to metabolize the medications; (4) assess all co-morbidities, potential complications and psychological impact of and on medication use and (5) identify those motivated by secondary gain exclusively.
