Brits Spending Plans Haunted by Ghost of Christmas Past

Nov. 20, 2013 - PRLog -- Following on from recent news that October retail sales have dipped, a survey by DiscountVouchers.co.uk has revealed that people across Britain are suffering from a ‘recession hangover’ with 88% of Brits admitting they won’t be spending more money this Christmas, despite signs of an economic recovery.

Christmas 2013 could be set to lack festive cheer for retailers according to a new survey, carried out by money saving website DiscountVouchers.co.uk (http://www.discountvouchers.co.uk/), which has found that 88% of Brits are haunted by the recession and won’t be spending more money over the festive season, despite positive signs that the economy is in recovery.

The survey questioned people across the UK about their festive spending habits now that the economy was showing signs of an upturn. It showed Southerners are particularly gloomy with 90% of Londoners and people who live in the South East refusing to spend more. Revealing a certain lack of festive cheer, people aged between 45 and 54 are the most downbeat generation, with only 8% prepared to increase their Christmas expenditure this year.

“Despite many reports that the economy is showing positive signs of recovery, consumers in the UK, particularly the older generations who have lived through recessions before, are understandably wary of spending too much,” says Gareth Robinson CEO of DiscountVouchers.co.uk. “There are still many worries, including job security and energy price rises, so people are hanging onto their cash and staying cautious this festive season.”

When asked what items they would shop for, if confident that they would have extra cash this year, the Welsh were the most generous, with 69% saying they’d buy more Christmas presents. 75% of Scots said they would spend more cash on food and 60% of people living in the West Midlands indicated that they would rather spend their money on partying.
