Nov. 18, 2013 - PRLog -- Across Puerto Rico and the rest of the United States, November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month.  Lung cancer is the leading cause of death due to cancer and the second most commonly diagnosed cancer in both genders.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in 2010 there were 201,144 people who were diagnosed with lung cancer in the United States.  That same year, 158,248 people died from the condition.  Also in 2010, 14% of all cancer diagnoses and 28% of all cancer deaths were due to lung cancer.

Although cigarette smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer, there are other environmental pollutants that can also increase a person’s risk of developing lung cancer. The Surgeon General has said that radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer, and health experts recommend people have their homes tested.  Asbestos, which was used in many building materials in both residential and commercial properties, is another cause of lung cancer.  In addition to lung cancer, exposure to asbestos can result in asbestosis and mesothelioma.

Exposure to various other pollutants and industrial compounds may also increase a person’s risk of developing lung cancer.   Across Puerto Rico and the Caribbean, Zimmetry Environmental provides indoor air quality testing services for asbestos, radon, environmental tobacco smoke and a wide range of other harmful pollutants to identify situations that could be putting people’s health at risk.

“At Zimmetry, we support people getting involved and learning more about IAQ pollutants that can cause lung cancer and other respiratory conditions during Lung Cancer Awareness Month,” reports Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental.  “For those facing IAQ issues, the experts at Zimmetry offer testing services along with solutions to ensure building occupants are not being exposed to potentially harmful pollutants that could impact their health.  Zimmetry has professionals ready to respond to sick building, environmental compliance, indoor air quality, asbestos, lead-based paint, Phase IESAs and general environmental consulting issues at a moment’s notice.”
