Grantham University Provides a “Hand Up” to Homeless Veterans with Heart of America Stand Down

For two days, 35 staff helped set up and run the biannual event at Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kan.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Nov. 15, 2013 - PRLog -- In a war, “stand down” is a break in fighting that offers military members some much needed rest and respite from battle. In the Kansas City metro area, Heart of America Stand Down (http://www.kcstanddown.org/index.html) strives to offer the estimated 2,000 homeless veterans a chance to get a break in their fight for survival. Rather than offering a hand out, Stand Down and their partners, like Grantham University, provide a hand up.

On Thursday, November 7th, and Friday, November 8th, 35 Grantham University staff worked side-by-side with other volunteers to serve those who served, but have fallen on hard times. They helped sort donations, assembled toiletry bags, served a hot meal, assisted veterans and their dependents through the Stand Down process, and continued to help change lives.

“Stand Down is a cause that is very close to our hearts as a large portion of our student population is made up of service members and veterans,” reflected Joseph McGrath, Grantham’s president. “The idea of veterans who have fought for our freedom now fighting for survival at home is, unfortunately, a sad reality, but one that we are dedicated to help change.”

This is the 22nd year that Heart of America Stand Down has worked with the Greater Kansas City community to combat veteran homelessness through short- and long-term resources.

In addition to serving those who have served through volunteering efforts, Grantham University offers a number of scholarships specifically for service members, veterans, military spouses and first responders. Grantham's history of service to the military began in 1951, when World War II veteran, Donald Grantham, founded the University to provide continuing education opportunities to veterans returning home from war. For more than 62 years, the University has remained true to its founder’s pledge to serve the academic needs of those who serve our country by providing high-quality, affordable professionally relevant, student focused degree programs.
