Follow on Google News | Hoag Orthopedic Institute Doctors Author Study of Same Day Discharge forPartial Knee ReplacementBy: Hoag Orthopedic Institute Unicompartmental knee arthroplasty procedures involve the removal and replacement of a ‘compartment’ The study, authored by Hoag Orthopedic Institute (HOI) surgeons and clinicians noted that improvements and refinement of the perioperative pathway and techniques over the last decade allowed for successful same day discharge of 160 consecutive patients at HOI. “We’re pleased to showcase our successes in building a protocol which is best for our patients, and hope that our model will become a gold-standard for care,” said Dr. Robert Gorab, Chief Medical Officer of HOI and a leading author of the study. The study found that due to improvements in the process before, during and after surgery, patients can actually be discharged sooner and without uncontrolled pain or nausea. Additionally, none of the patients in the study required overnight admission for side effects of the surgery, and results showed high patient satisfaction following discharge. Study authors included Joseph Gondusky, MD; Leera Choi, BA; Naila Khalaf, MD, PhD; Jay Patel, MD; Steven Barnett, MD; and Robert Gorab, MD. “These are exciting results considering our aim has always been and always will be to get our patients back to their daily routines as quickly and safely as possible,” said Dr. Steven Barnett, a study co-author and surgeon at HOI.
