ROANOKE, Va. - Nov. 13, 2013 - PRLog -- The much anticipated Faces of Roanoke photo documentary book made a spectacular debut at the 2013 CityWorks Expo in October. Continuing with the vibe of place-making and city revitalization - - the official public book launch party is set for November 21 at an “under construction” warehouse in downtown Roanoke.

The Faces of Roanoke idea began about a year ago when award-winning photographer – and Roanoke native – Brett Winter Lemon had the idea to document the people and energy that were driving the revitalization of this southwest Virginia city. Partnering with CityWorks – a collective of social entrepreneurs who have been helping drive the transformation – Lemon set up a plain white screen in a space at the geographic center of the city and began snapping portraits. From musicians to construction workers and strangers to friends, a visual snapshot of heart of the city began to take shape.

“So much is happening and there needs to be a stamp on this section of time,” says Lemon. “In my eyes that stamp is found in the faces of the people we see every day.”

The forward of the book, written by award-winning journalist, Beth Macy, captures the essence of the project beautifully: “...Roanoke is a city on the move. But more importantly it’s a collective of Roanokers on the move – hiking and biking up Mill Mountain, shaking a cocktail, shopping at a farmer’s market, carrying the mail, playing (or seeing) a gig at Kirk Avenue Music Hall,” Macy writes. “...Brett Winter Lemon’s photos capture the randomness of everyday life on one downtown block where big ideas incubate...”

The project has now culminated in a spectacular 195 page hard-cover book filled with black and white images of the people who bring life to this vibrant small city -- capturing the energy and movement that Roanoke embraces. But it doesn’t stop there. In the spirit of all CityWorks community endeavors – guests are asked give back by bringing a non-perishable food item that will be donated to Feeding America Southwest Virginia.

“In the end we hope to create something that speaks volumes and also creates good,” says Lemon. “It’s the legacy found in this slice of the world and this small moment in time.”

The official launch party will be held at 6:30pm Thursday, November 21st in a warehouse on Shenandoah Avenue in downtown Roanoke – but come early and enjoy a taste of the city at one of the area food trucks we have all come to love! Perfect for holiday and corporate gifts, this limited edition first-printing books will be available for sale and Brett will be on hand to autograph copies.
