HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Nov. 12, 2013 - PRLog -- Huntsville, AL –This year as families in Huntsville and Madison County traditionally celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday, your local Roto-Rooter Plumbers will also  prepare for another tradition, the day after Thanksgiving.  The day after Thanksgiving is customarily the single busiest year for Roto-Rooter Plumbers. Preparation and cleanup for the large holiday meal tends to leave unwanted waste in the kitchen and garbage disposal. Add a home full of holiday guests who require more showers and bathroom visits, include more clothes needing to be washed, and you now have a strain on your household plumbing.

“We typically have an increase in business during the Thanksgiving holiday and we prepare for it accordingly,” states Roto-Rooter Plumbers owner, David Byrd.  “Many homes with moderately clogged drains go unnoticed over time, so when the weekend arrives, the extra kitchen preparations and cleanup, as well as extra guests can overwhelm a plumbing system.”  He continued, “It’s just part of life that no one is immune to, and Roto-Rooter Plumbers stand ready to get your plumbing back to normal.”

Nationwide, the 4-Day Thanksgiving weekend averages a 21% increase on incoming calls to Roto-Rooter over any Thursday through Sunday period during the year.  Calls for kitchen jobs alone, will jump 50% above the average on the holiday Friday.

If you are hosting Thanksgiving this year, avoid a visit from your plumber this holiday by following these clog-prevention tips:

1.      Never pour fats or cooking oils down drains. They solidify in pipes. Instead, wipe grease from pots with paper towels and throw in trash.

2.      Avoid putting stringy, fibrous or starchy waste in the garbage disposal. Poultry skins, celery, fruit & potato peels, for example, cannot be sufficiently broken down.

3.      Make sure the water and disposal are running when you put food into it. Don't wait until it's full to turn it on. To help clean drains, run water for 30 seconds after turning disposal off.

4.      Never flush cotton balls, swabs, hair or facial scrub pads down a toilet. They don't dissolve and will cause clogs.

5.      Try to address any plumbing problems before the holiday and before guests arrive. However, in holiday emergencies, don't hesitate to ask up front about extra holiday service fees.

As always, know your limits. Often, minor plumbing problems turn into plumbing catastrophes if not handled properly.
