The Skin Cancer Foundation reported that one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. Scary, right?! In the spring and summer month's hot weather reminds us to apply sunscreen and protect our skin, but did you know that Ultraviolet Radiation is just as strong and dangerous in the cooler months? UV rays are not affected by changes in temperature so it is important to remember to apply SPF daily, no matter the weather. In fact, the sun is 80% stronger when reflecting off of the snow!

UVA rays, often rightfully referred to as "aging rays", can cause early aging and skin damage all year round. This is especially true when it comes to areas that are more exposed, like the face and neck. These harmful rays will break down the collagen and elastin in your skin, meaning your skin will lose the ability to repair itself and be more prone to aging. Without sun protection, just a few minutes of exposure each day can cause noticeable changes to the skin. Freckles, age spots, wrinkles, loose skin, and a blotchy complexion can all be traced to sun exposure.

In order to protect your skin from sun damage this winter apply a broad spectrum sunscreen daily on exposed areas such as your face, neck and hands. Use a lip balm with SPF 15 or higher and reapply throughout the day. Shield your eyes by wearing sunglasses that have UV protection. Last but not least, if you want your skin to glow this winter tanning beds are NOT the answer! A customized sunless tan application can give you the same conservative results you desire, without risking your health in the process!
