AUSTIN, Texas - Nov. 5, 2013 - PRLog -- Austin, Texas - November 5, 2013 - Two friends recognized the healthcare plight in 2007 and created a website to urge the uninsured to buy high deductible health insurance plans and pay cash (i.e., at the time of service) with doctors on a menu platform.

Scott Vanlandingham and Daniel Hummel were both small business owners, discussing their lack of health insurance while at a dinner celebrating a spouse's birthday. During the course of the evening, Mr. Vanlandingham - whom has been in healthcare for 15 years - mentioned an idea for a web-based portal to allow patients and doctors to come together without the “middleman” (insurance companies) clogging up administrative time, adding costs or delaying treatment.

After many meetings and different models eschewed, PatientDeals.org was founded. This was established as a free service for doctors, clinics or hospitals to post advertisements on certain procedures or exams at discounted rates. The benefit for the doctors is to have payments made at the time-of-service, and the discounts allow patients - without insurance or on high deductible insurance plans - to spend less out-of-pocket.

The concept was needed and delivered, but was well ahead of its time.

After Obama was elected, the founders thought the young civic-minded President would actually accomplish what many other American leaders couldn’t, and tabled the website.

However, given the current climate due to the Obamacare rollout, it's evident that the Patient Deals service is more apropos today than ever!

The Patient Deals website has many links and reference articles, but one of the most useful features is the “Out-of-Pocket Expenses Calculator," that shows Americans what they're actually paying for their combined health insurance and medical costs, as well as how to properly assess their potential health insurance needs.

When Scott's colleague - another 20 year veteran in the healthcare industry - called the founders the “Nostradamus” of healthcare last week, they only responded with, “better late than never.” The Patient Deals services and website are available for public use.
