PORTLAND, Ore. - Nov. 4, 2013 - PRLog -- Long-term unemployment, persistent underemployment and the high cost of food, gas, utilities and rent has forced more people to seek emergency food over the last year. Joining the fight against hunger, PODS® (http://www.pods.com/portland-oregon.aspx), the moving (http://www.pods.com/Moving.aspx) and storage (http://www.pods.com/Storage.aspx) company, is donating more than 40 PODS containers to provide Jiffy Lube (http://www.jiffylube.com/) and the Oregon Food Bank (http://www.oregonfoodbank.org/) with free storage and logistics during Jiffy Lube’s massive food drive. The food drive runs Nov. 1 – Dec. 31.

“We are delighted to receive the generous help from PODS for this important food drive. This is the 10th year that Jiffy Lube has partnered with Oregon Food Bank and local pantries to help those struggling with food insecurity in our community,” said Janice Jack, Jiffy Lube food drive organizer. “Placing a PODS container at our 40-plus locations in the Portland, Vancouver and Salem areas makes it convenient for people to make a food donation, even just a few cans, to help those in need.”

PODS® containers will be placed at Jiffy Lube locations in and around Portland and Salem, Oregon, and southwest Washington. PODS will store donations for the food bank and local partners. This logistic and transportation gift provides Oregon Food Bank enormous savings on staffing, gasoline and wear and tear on their own trucks during the massive drive—savings that translate into more food for the hungry during the holiday season.

Nonperishable, packaged food items needed during the drive include: canned vegetables, beans, fruit, soup, tuna, chicken, fruit juice, pasta, rice and peanut butter, as well as hot and cold cereals.

“The demand for food this year is higher than ever, so our goal is to collect 50,000 pounds of food,” said Darryl Wright, territory manager of PODS of Portland. “To have the public come together and donate a canned good is a great step in helping end hunger in the community. We are proud to provide our moving and storage logistics to help make sure the community is well-fed during the holiday season.”

The Oregon Food Bank network, including 358 partner agencies in western Oregon, distributes more than 1 million emergency food boxes to 1 out of every 5 Oregonians every year. About a third of those receiving emergency food are children.

“We know we can only meet the staggering need for emergency food with the help of the entire community and through strong public-private partnerships,” said Susannah Morgan, CEO of Oregon Food Bank. “We ask for your continued support as we work to eliminate hunger and its root causes.”
