Roncalli STEM Academy Teaching Physics As A Separate Science Discipline

6th Grade Students Receive See The Change USA’s Program. See The Change USA’s Physics curriculum not only meets current and new generation science standards, it exceeds them and currently 108 6th grade students at Roncalli STEM Academy will benefit from learning age-appropriate physics as a separate science discipline.

PUEBLO, Colo. - Nov. 4, 2013 - PRLog -- As part of Roncalli’s innovation status, the school continues its transition as a premier choice STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) middle school. Roncalli administrators and teachers know that learning embedded in exploration and discovery is powerful. They believe that teaching in this manner will accomplish two things; it will ignite the motivation to discover and to excel academically in every student and prepare Pueblo youth to play a meaningful part in shaping a hopeful future for our nation.

Roncalli 6th grade science teacher, Kimberly Barre, sees this as a tremendous opportunity for her students, an opportunity not lost on those 6th graders. “The students are truly impressed they’re taking physics when many other 6th graders are not,” said Barre. “They’re proud of their accomplishments, they enjoy it and they see the benefit down the road.”

The physics instruction is very conceptual. Students gain the understanding of what physics is all about and how it applies to everyday life. “Physics is all around you. It’s very fundamental to everything these kids experience,” added Barre. “This gives 6th grade students an amazing foundation.”

Barre receives weekly training from See The Change USA advisors via Skype. The sessions provide feedback from previous lessons, while also looking forward to next week’s lesson plans, which include everything from the study of mass and density, to light phenomena, to mechanical motion. Labs are included in the curriculum.

“When they leave the classroom they’re smiling,” noted Barre. “That speaks volumes.”

See The Change USA was founded in August 2012 and is a national educational and charitable non-profit organization committed to student advancement in Science and Engineering.  This is accomplished through introducing physics, chemistry and computer programming in middle schools, paralleling what is already in existence internationally.  See The Change USA has applied to the IRS for tax exempt status as a 501 (C) 3 organization.
