BEAVERTON, Ore. - Nov. 4, 2013 - PRLog -- Monday, November 11th is Veteran’s Day, a holiday that schools across the country celebrate by giving students a day off.  At Pilgrim Lutheran School, in downtown Beaverton, November 11th will be a school day like no other – including history lessons from local war veterans, field trips to the Veterans Memorial Park and Vietnam Memorial, lunchtime visits with veterans and an all-school assembly.

Pilgrim Lutheran School’s faculty, staff, parents, students and the church’s Director of Christian Education, Andrea Gehrke, are all working together to plan this special day with hopes of teaching the students about US history and why our freedom is not free. Teachers are creating class plans highlighting the contributions of our country’s war vets and history of wars the United States has fought in.  Several teachers are having guest speakers teach class.  Students are being asked to write questions they want to ask a veteran.  Speakers during lunch and the assembly will answer them.

The schools lunch coordinator, Cynthia Dixon, who makes all school lunches from scratch, is preparing a feast for invited veterans and students.  The school gym will be transformed into a ‘mess hall’ and middle school students involved in student leadership will serve lunch.

“Pilgrim is blessed with several war veterans in our school and church families who want to share their experiences, stories and hope for the country with our students,” says Chris Herold, principal at Pilgrim Lutheran School.  Those veterans include men who fought on the beaches of Normandy, in the jungles of Vietnam, and in the Middle East.

This is the first year the school has chosen to stay open during this holiday.
