Minneapolis folk quintet Very Small Animal is set to release their debut LP “Port of Call” on November 30 at Icehouse. The show will include performances from DJ Tickle Torture and Red Daughters, and will be sponsored by Hymie’s Record Store. Very Small Animal began in early 2010 as a songwriting collaboration between Patrick Noonan and Tim Harlan-Marks. In 2011, the group recorded its debut EP “Starlings” “Port of Call” is an eclectic mix of earnest, tightly-crafted, harmony-driven songs that draw from a wide range of genres. Indie rock, doo-wop, gospel, gypsy-folk, psychedelic and afro-beat influences are all present in varying degrees, owing in large part to creative arrangements from lead guitarist Brian Laidlaw and drummer Sean Geraty. Vocalist Lora Strey provides backing harmonies. Very Small Animal is part of the Yes!Let’s Collective, a cohort of Twin Cities musicians, artists and organizers which includes Brian Laidlaw and the Family Trade, Oak Ribbons, Byerself, Becky Gaunt and the Gauntlettes, Foxy Morons, Misty Swamps, The Dusty Porch Sisters, Kazyak, Alpenglow, and Bipolar Bear.
