Follow on Google News | The Power of A Mother's Tongue:Psychologist Reacts to Recent Mother Daughter Relationships StudyA recent study says that mothers who are hypercritical and overbearing are causing harm that can span a girl's lifetime. Dr. Trevicia Williams is responding to the study with a series of seminars that helps moms and daughters communicate effectively.
By: Real Beauty Inside Out According to a University of Georgia study, "The mother-daughter relationship has more influence on a woman's personal development than her relationship with other members of the family - and a problematic relationship with mom can have consequences throughout life." Lead author of the study, Analisa Arroyo, Ph.D., assistant professor of communication at the University of Georgia in Athens, GA, says that young adult females whose mothers frequently engaged in “family expressed emotion” which she explained as “an extraordinarily harmful pattern of criticism, over-involvement, excessive attention, and emotional reactivity that is usually communicated by parents toward their children,” tended to have poorer social and relationship skills. In turn, poor social and relationship skills were related to the daughters’ higher levels of psychological distress and disordered eating attitudes The study found that "when moms were hyper-involved and overly critical, daughters tended to have poorer social and relationship skills, which in turn led to higher levels of disordered eating attitudes like body dissatisfaction, eating disorders, unhealthy weight practices and overall bruised self-esteem." "Bring on the parental advice when it comes to your teen's safety or personal interests; however, to have well-adjusted daughters, mothers must understand how unsolicited advice and criticism hurts during adolescent years," says Dr. Williams. Mothers and their teen daughters (http://www.realbeautyinsideout.com) from all over San Antonio are expected to attend this fun, interactive, and, educational breakfast and seminar during which moms and teen girls will connect, build, bond and grow while learning valuable effective communication skills. http://www.photosnack.com/ "By participating in this seminar, moms will learn how to have healthy and effective conversations with their daughters and how to use teachable moments during everyday events such as the recent story about modestly dressed Selena Gomez's performance at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn as she told the audience of mostly tweens and teens accompanied by their parents that they were beautiful just the way they were and that what she thought was sexy is "Class," says Dr. Trevicia Williams. Moms who accompanied their tween and teen daughters at Selena Gomez' concert had much different teachable moments to seize than those who watched Miley Cyrus' performance at MTV VMA's, says Dr. Trevicia Williams. http://www.nydailynews.com/ About Real Beauty Inside Out Healthy Mother Daughter Relationships Dr. Williams is a psychologist, helping people "get there" in their personal, family and work life guru, speaker, author, talk show host, former Texas child bride, and, the author of "There Are Pearls in the Pain of Every Experience: Spiritual Truths about Life's Experiences," She has been featured on numerous TV networks, including, LifeTime, Lifetime Movie Network, BET, Oxygen, and, Bravo, and is also the host of "Getting There with Dr. Trevicia," which airs on ION network in Dallas and Blog Talk Radio, where she helps people find answers to everyday problems, motivation, productivity tips and cutting edge information about entrepreneurship, health and finance.
