BOSTON - Nov. 1, 2013 - PRLog -- New York, NY - Richard P. Brown, MD, and Patricia Gerbarg, MD integrative psychiatrists known for healing mental health work with survivors of mass disasters, will participate in a panel discussion from 8:30 am to 10 am on Wednesday, November 6, at the American Public Health Association (APHA) Annual Meeting & Exposition at the Boston Convention Center, 415 Summer Street, Boston, MA.  The panel, entitled Six Promising Complementary and Alternative Treatments for Mental Health Conditions: A Comparative Evidence-Based Approach, also includes David Mischoulon MD, PhD, and David Shern, PhD; it is sponsored by Mental Health America.  The moderator is Joseph de Raismes.

The objectives of the session will be to compare efficacy, drug interactions and side effects of six promising CAM (Complementary and Alternative Medicine) treatments. The panelists will discuss the use of yoga, breathing techniques and meditation to relieve stress, depression, anxiety, PTSD, ADHD; the herb Rhodiola rosea for neuroprotection and relief from stress and depression; S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe) for depression relief, and St. John’s Wort, omega-3 fatty acids, and cranial simulation to relieve anxiety, depression, and sleep disorders.

The session will also address examples of misunderstandings about CAM treatments and how an outline can be used to correct the misunderstandings. The subjects are designed to appeal to all healthcare practitioners and APHA members.

Session no. 5065.0 is eligible for the following credits: Medical (CME), Health Education (CHES), Nursing (CNE), and Public Health (CPH). It is endorsed by Alternative and Complementary Health Practices, Asian Pacific Islander Caucus for Public Health, Community-Based Public Health Caucus, Chiropractic Health Care, and the Disability committee.

The theme of this year’s APHA annual meeting is: Think Global Act Local – Best Practices Around the World.

Dr. Brown, associate clinical professor of psychiatry at Columbia University in New York, gives over 200 lectures every year, including full-day courses for the American Psychiatric Association and other professional groups. He is a certified teacher of Aikido (4th Dan), Yoga, Qi Gong, and meditation. His workshops have helped thousands of people deal with everyday stress and enabled survivors of trauma and mass disasters to recover their health and well-being.

Dr. Gerbarg, assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at New York Medical College is a graduate of Harvard Medical School and the Boston Psychoanalytic Institute. In addition to clinical practice, she lectures, writes, and does research on natural treatments and mind-body practices.

Dr. Brown and Dr. Gerbarg have co-authored over 50 professional publications on complementary and alternative treatments including scientific papers, books, and book chapters.
