Xavier High School Students Participate in Community Service Day

More than 700 Xavier Students will serve over 200 worksites in the Cedar Rapids area.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Nov. 1, 2013 - PRLog -- On Wednesday, November 6, over 700 Xavier students will be helping the Cedar Rapids Area Community through its annual Community Service Day. Xavier students will begin the day with a prayer service, and then travel to various worksites throughout the day.

Xavier's 2013 Community Service Day will truly be a “community” event as faculty, staff and nearly 100 parents will be transporting students to the sites where service will be performed. "Organizing over 700 to serve over 200 sites is certainly a tall task," says Xavier High School Associate Principal, Angela Olson. "Thankfully, Xavier is a community that pulls together to make such a day possible - a day that speaks so directly to the mission of Xavier High School."

Xavier students will be working throughout Cedar Rapids, Marion, and Hiawatha on a variety of service opportunities. Freshmen, Sophomores and Seniors will be going to homes to assist elderly or disabled homeowners with regular fall chores such as raking leaves and cleaning windows. Over 200 homeowners (clients of Aging Services) will be assisted throughout the day on Wednesday.

The Junior Class will be working with Habitat for Humanity, ReStore, Prairie Woods Retreat House, Catholic Worker House, Metro Catholic Food Pantry and several parishes. The students will be cleaning and organizing inside buildings as well as working with outdoor cleanup. At the parishes, students will perform regular maintenance jobs in those churches. Parishes that will be serviced include St. Matthew, St. Wenceslaus, St. Joseph, St. Jude, St. Pius, All Saints, and St. Ludmilla.
