Russell Bedford firms contribute to 11th edition of World Bank Doing Business report

Cutting red tape could save entrepreneurs 45 million working days per year

LONDON - Oct. 31, 2013 - PRLog -- For the fifth consecutive year, Russell Bedford member firms have assisted the World Bank in researching its annual Doing Business project, contributing data on tax regulation, recent reforms, and the real costs of tax compliance worldwide.

While OECD economies still dominate rankings for the world’s best business locations, emerging markets continue to narrow the gap, with Ukraine, Rwanda, the Russian Federation, the Philippines, Kosovo, Djibouti, Cote d’Ivoire, Burundi, Macedonia and Guatemala showing the most improved business environments in the past year.

Recent economic turmoil appears to have had no impact on reform initiatives, with 114 countries implementing 238 regulatory reforms in 2012/13 – an increase of 18% on the previous year.  There is still scope for improvement, however, with the report arguing that entrepreneurs could save 45 million working days per year if economies around the world were to follow best practices in regulatory processes for starting a business.

With the report now in its 11th year, Doing Business 2014: Understanding Regulations for Small and Medium-Size Enterprises analyses the impact of regulations throughout the business lifecycle across 189 jurisdictions, ranking economies on the basis of 10 indicators including ease of starting a business and paying taxes.  Russell Bedford member firms have contributed to each report’s Paying Taxes survey since 2009.

Russell Bedford International CEO Alan Bezzant commented: “This year’s report delivers a highly positive message for entrepreneurs worldwide, proving that governments in a range of jurisdictions recognise the very real value of targeting red tape in supporting entrepreneurs and promoting business growth.  There is still much to be done, however, and Russell Bedford member firms will continue to campaign for a lighter compliance burden in every jurisdiction in which we operate.”
