SONS OF KEMET - Winners of Best Jazz Act in 18th annual MOBO Awards

Oct. 30, 2013 - PRLog -- The band, Sons of Kemet is led by Shabaka Hutchings who is not only the clarinettist and saxophonist but is also the band’s composer.  On tuba is Oren Marshall, and both Tom Skinner and Seb Rochford are on drums. Together these four creative forces have produced music that is not only influential and lyrical it is above all highly unique.

Shabaka Hutchings was originally inspired to put the band together when visiting Barbados, a place in which he spent most of his childhood. Here he was inspired by Caribbean sounds and artists who had a lasting impact on Shabaka, and this musical influence most definitely left a mark on him.

The two drummers within the band create enchanting sounds that help to create a truly unforgettable and highly enjoyable musical experience. Plus by having a pioneer of jazz music such as Oren Marshall on tuba; helps to create a wonderfully unorthodox configuration between all members of the band.

The band have received great accolade from a range of reputable sources, including the Guardian who recently described the band as “carrying rhythmic hipness to new levels.”

The announcement of their MOBO win at the 18th annual awards held at the SSE Hydro in Glasgow was made hot on the heels of their highly acclaimed debut album release Burn.

Seldom has a band on the British jazz scene created such a buzz before releasing an album, but Sons of Kemet’s album was released to rave reviews. The band received a high degree of on-air support from various stations, sources and other artists.

BBC Music Magazine, have also reviewed the album stating that; “The opening track sounds like an approaching stampede of elephants. It’s exciting, original and challenging.”
