Notre Dame of Maryland University Alumna Mary Beth Lennon Named President of Mercy High School

BALTIMORE - Oct. 29, 2013 - PRLog -- Notre Dame of Maryland University alumna Mary Beth Lennon has been appointed president of Mercy High School in Baltimore. Lennon, a Mercy graduate, will be the first alumna of that school to serve as president.

In Lennon’s honor, Notre Dame President Joan Develin Coley announced the creation of two scholarships for Mercy High School students who attend Notre Dame. These are the first two of the Alumnae and Alumni in Education—Promise for Tomorrow scholarships that will be awarded to exceptional students nominated by alumnae or alumni of the University who work in the field of education.

“Each year, four-year scholarships, valued at $40,000, or $10,000 per year, will be awarded to two outstanding Mercy High School seniors who demonstrate academic excellence and leadership as exemplified by Mary Beth Lennon, Mercy High School class of 1985 and Notre Dame of Maryland University class of 1989,” Coley said. “We are delighted to honor Mary Beth in a way that will continue to transform the lives of young women through education!”

Ms. Lennon is the director of communications and assistant to the president at Cristo Rey Jesuit High School in Fells Point. She is part of the leadership team that opened Cristo Rey Jesuit in 2007. Previously, Ms. Lennon had served as director of corporate and foundation relations at Notre Dame of Maryland University and Brassica Protection Products, a biotech start-up. Earlier in her career, she had worked in Washington, D.C., at the International Center for Journalists and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Ms. Lennon earned her bachelor of arts degree in history from Notre Dame of Maryland University. She also holds a master of arts degree in Latin American history from The Catholic University of America, in Washington, D.C. Ms. Lennon serves on the boards of the Independent College Fund of Maryland, Baltimore Heritage, and St. Francis of Assisi School, in northeast Baltimore. In 2011, The Daily Record named her one of Maryland’s Top 100 Women.
