Follow on Google News |  First NYC Dancehall Theater Production Brings FIYAHBy: Fiyah Productions FIYAH! Theater is directed, produced and choreographed by Jessica Phoenix, founder and owner of Fiyah Productions, LLC in partnership with co-choreographers Blacka di Danca and Yaminah Legohn. The two-day Dancehall theater performance debut theater production embraces and tributes the origins of Dancehall culture through a dynamic showcase of Caribbean life, life challenges and fun told through reggae dance. Each selection is designed to increase exposure to the Dancehall dance genre and to elevate its artistic platform through storytelling, raw energy, passion and innovation. In addition to Dancehall, the production is accented with a West African and Contemporary dance genres. FIYAH! is a colorful performance reflective of Dancehall’s roots, energy and authentic vibrant culture that will grab the hearts of Caribbean culture lovers, dance and theater enthusiasts alike. "Dancehall is something that has gotten into my system a long time ago and just got stuck there. It just never let go and just grabbed a hold of my heart... I just want to see the culture grow -- I want to see more opportunity for the people who are involved in it, especially Jamaicans,” Fiyah Productions founder and lead choreographer, Jessica Phoenix shares. “Me doing this project I want to represent it in the right way and have Jamaica fully back me with this." In an interview with Whatz Up TV, Latonya Styles of First Class Dancers and DanceJA in Jamaica stated: "Dancehall is really about performance and showcasing your talent--not just about going in the studio and teaching/learning. I think it's really fabulous for Jessica and Blacka [di Danca] to come up with the idea to bring it on a stage. We need to showcase it [Dancehall] in a theater format." 2013 International Dancehall King, Matthew Richards, of the Shady Squad, adds that the dancers have the natural vibe and positive energy of the Dancehall culture and and those are the most important elements to have in Dancehall performance. Other choreography works of hers have appeared on Atlanta's Center Stage, Alliance Theater, and in Cici Kelley's first Phazes of Love showcase. Jessica has toured with the Universoul Circus U.S. Tour and the KING Michael International Tour, a live Michael Jackson tribute show. Phoenix landed a feature in UpScale Magazine for Caribbean Dance Fitness and a principal role in the first full production of America's Got Talent finalists, ILUMINATE DANCE, with whom she is a current company member and performed with at the 2012 Presidential Inauguration and on MAGIC TV in Paris, France. Her dedication to the growth and positivity in Dancehall culture gained her recognition as a Global Link US Female Nominee for the Dance Jamaica Awards 2012. ABOUT BLACKA DI DANCA As a highly sought after choreographer, dancer and teacher, Blacka has toured domestically and abroad, performing with Reggae artists Collie Buddz and Gappy Ranks. He has been featured in several music videos, including Busta Rhymes' featuring Nicki Minaj and Pharrell "Twerk It" remix. Blacka won the title of of "Champion of Champions" in NYC's Dance-A-Rama competition. ABOUT YAMINAH LEGOHN Yaminah Legohn is a choreographer, teacher, professional dancer and performer of West African, Dancehall/Reggae, Hip-Hop, Jazz and Modern dance styles. She has worked with multiple artists such as Shakira, N.E.R.D, Tony Toni Tone, Lil Wayne, and B.o.B. and appeared on TV shows and commercials such as Disney’s Phineas & Ferb and “So Random”. Legohn has performed in the Black Choreography Festival Bay Area, American College Dance Festival, The Soul Nation Festival in Indonesia, Choreographer's Ball "Carnival" in Hollywood and New York, World of Dance, S.F.
