SPIRIT LAKE, Iowa - Oct. 28, 2013 - PRLog -- Spirit Lake, IA 51360 - “Physical Therapy has a lot to offer everyone in any walk of life,” said Connie Petersen, General Manager of Hot Spring Spas of Iowa.

“Whether it is used to get through a period of intense illness or recover from a serious injury, or to make dealing with chronic pain easier and improve the quality of life, people can do simple things to increase the effects of treatment,” continued Petersen. Here are three helpful ways to get healthier with physical therapy.

Be Involved - There are two ways to go through physical therapy, as a spectator or as a player. Just going and being manipulated by the therapist will get some results, but actually getting involved, learning how each exercise helps improve the action and recovery of muscles, nerves and joints and finding out how extra work can help will make therapy sessions much more effective.

Being involved also means being “there.” Shut off cell phones and put away all other electronic gadgets. Distractions make it harder to pay attention to what is going on. Talking on a cell phone or texting and reading emails also takes away from the therapist’s time.

The same goes for time spent doing physical therapy exercises at home. The less interruption from phones, texts and emails, the better the workout will be. Keeping the routine going without stopping to answer a text, or answer a call, keeps muscles warmed up and working properly.

Be Patient - Therapy takes time. Ask the doctor and therapist what they expect from physical therapy and how long the treatment will take. While in most cases they won’t be able to pinpoint an exact length of time, they can give each patient a reasonable expectation for recovery.

When physical therapy treatment is being used to combat long-term chronic pain, patients can expect to feel immediate improvement, but the whole benefit will take place gradually. In the case of illnesses such as arthritis, osteoporosis and diseases like those, keeping up with the treatment plan, even after the pain is relieved, is an important part of therapy. Keeping up with sessions and daily workouts will ensure the pain stays under control.

Get Rid of Toxins and Stress - Adding a sauna to the home is a great way to increase overall health and also get better, faster results from physical therapy. Dr. Luke Fortney from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine often prescribes sauna therapy as a way of lowering stress levels and flushing toxins from the body.

The dry, intensive heat of a sauna increases the effectiveness of physical therapy by allowing the body to relax after appointments and daily exercises, putting muscles at ease, as well as increasing blood flow to injured areas for faster healing.

A study that shows the best way to use sauna therapy for better health and faster healing is the Hubbard Sauna Detoxification Program. The study outlines a method of using a sauna and exercise, such as what is given during physical therapy, to increase the effects of the workout. During the study, participants were also given the vitamin niacin that helped improve circulation, and followed up exercises with sauna sessions of between 2 and 5 hours, broken up with cool down periods and drinking plenty of water for hydration.

“To help people understand how hydrotherapy can help improve overall health  and well-being, we will provide free hot tub test soaks in our 5 locations during the entire month,” commented Petersen. “We want to encourage local consumers to check out the benefits of a relaxing soak in an energy efficient hot tub for themselves.”
