Gary Thien, AFM Honored at ASFMRA's 2013 Annual Meeting

The American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers (ASFMRA) recognized Gary Thien, AFM, ARA with the 2013 D. Howard Doane Award during the 2013 ASFMRA Annual Meeting in Reno, NV held November 11-15, 2013.

DENVER - Nov. 13, 2013 - PRLog -- The ASFMRA’s prestigious D. Howard Doane Award was presented to Gary Thien, AFM, ARA of Thien Farm Management, Inc. in Council Bluffs, IA. The D. Howard Doane Award is held in great esteem in the American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers. It is given annually to a member or non-member who has demonstrated such qualities and outstanding contributions in the field of agriculture with emphasis on farm management and rural appraisal.

Gary Thien AFM, ARA, graduated from Iowa State University in 1974 and started managing farms in western Iowa for the Council Bluffs Savings Bank.  That same year he attended an Iowa Chapter meeting of the ASFMRA and became a member shortly thereafter.

During his 20 years of work with the bank, he managed and appraised farms in Iowa, Nebraska and Colorado.  During that period of time he received numerous awards for soil conservation practices applied to managed farms.  In 1993 he assisted the Iowa Chapter with a USAID consulting project in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

In 1994, he started his own farm management, appraisal and consulting business in Council Bluffs.  In 1999 his oldest son David joined the firm and in 2005 his youngest son Adam joined the firm.  In 2003, he developed the first Wetland Mitigation Bank in Iowa and now, with the assistance of his sons, is completing the development of a 5th bank.  In 2008 an opportunity to continue with international consulting arose and he now spent 50% of his time analyzing farm investment opportunities around the world which included Canada, Australia, Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Zambia, Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay.

Since joining the American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers (ASFMRA), he has served on numerous committees and is a past President of the Iowa Chapter.  Nationally he has chaired the Management Education Committee, the Accreditation Committee, has been a District Vice-President and President of the ASFMRA.  In 1999 he received the Buck Stalcup Excellence in Education Award and his firm was named Farm Manager of the year in 2005.  In 2010 he received the Carl Hertz Distinguished Service to Agricultural Award from the ASFMRA.

He has now retired after 31 years as a volunteer fireman/EMT for the Lewis Township Volunteer Fire Department and currently manages a Foods Resource Bank project raising funds for sustainable agricultural projects in under-developed countries.  In 2012 he joined Homestead Capital as a partner, an agricultural investment fund focusing on agriculture in the United States.
