Dr. Merriman, board-certified in gastroenterology and transplant hepatology, rejoined the Foundation in August as medical director of Liver Transplantation specializing in liver disease (hepatology)
After initial medical training at Trinity College Dublin, he completed a residency in internal medicine at Barnes Jewish Hospital, Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, followed by a chief residency and fellowship in gastroenterology there. He then completed an advanced fellowship in transplant hepatology (2000) at the University of California, San Francisco where he remained on the faculty for six years.
Dr. Merriman initially joined PFMA in 2007 and was appointed medical director of liver transplantation in 2010. In late 2011, he returned to his native Ireland to serve as medical director for the Irish National Liver Transplantation Unit at St. Vincent’s University Hospital in Dublin. Dr. Merriman has played a prominent role in the National Institutes of Health Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH) Clinical Research Network since its inception as an individual investigator and clinical scientist focused on non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Dr. Merriman has taught Hepatology formally to medical students, residents and fellows for over a decade with many awards for excellence. He is also the incoming chairman of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases Practice Guidelines Committee.
