LiceDoctors Boston Surveys Says Majority of Families with Head Lice Have Multiple Infested Members

BROOKLINE, Mass. - Oct. 22, 2013 - PRLog -- In a series of one on one qualitative interviews among families in the Boston metro area, results show that in the majority of families with a case of head lice, multiple family members had contracted the case, as well. The survey was conducted by LiceDoctors Head Lice Treatment Services and 50 families with head lice were interviewed. The survey further revealed that when there is a child in the family under the age of 10, there is a greater chance for multiple infestation within a family.

Among the 50 parents interviewed, 39 or 78% reported that more than one person in the family had contracted a case. Among the 39 families who were positive for multiple cases, 33 or 84.6% of the families had at least one child under the age of 10. Within the group of families with multiple cases, 35 or 89.7% of the time the mother also had contracted a case, while 26 or twp thirds of the time, at least one sibling had also contracted the case.

Lice are highly contagious and since younger children are more prone to be in physical proximity to other family members,the likelihood of spreading the case increases.  Lice are generally transferred through head to head contact as bugs crawl from person to person. Nits (lice eggs) are not contagious.
