Mac Qadir, P.E., to Present Advanced Oxidation Process Case Study at AIChE Annual Meeting

M. “Mac” Qadir, company founder and principal, will be a speaker at the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) Annual Meeting on November 5, 2013, in San Francisco, CA. Qadir, who is a professional engineer licensed in California, will present a case study on the use of an advanced oxidation process (AOP) to treat contaminated ground water in-situ at a former acetylene gas manufacturing site in Northern California.

“This remediation project was complex,” says Qadir. “There was a mess of acetone and hydrocarbon contaminants in the ground water which required that we inject over 10,000 gallons of a specially designed treatment mixture of oxygen release compound with both controlled release and fast acting varieties at 45 separate site locations.” Soil chemistry and varied subsurface conditions such as lime sludge and buried pipelines added to the complexity. Site access was limited to weekends and multiple drill rigs and support vehicles operated within a small site footprint, adding logistical and safety concerns.

Qadir notes, “The site started with one of the state’s highest concentrations of acetone in ground water. We were able to improve ground water quality by reducing concentrations of all dissolved contaminants to below cleanup standards. In fact, the site is getting closure by the lead agency, the County of San Mateo in November and site monitoring will no longer be required.”

Qadir’s paper is entitled, “Case Study – In-Situ Oxidation of Ground Water Contaminated by Petroleum Hydrocarbons, Acetone, and Chlorinated Hydrocarbons at a Former Industrial Facility in Northern California.” He will present it at AIChE’s Advanced Oxidation Processes Session which will be held at the Hilton Union Square, San Francisco.
