West Virginia Personal Injury Lawyer Bernie Layne Pushes for Change as President of WVAJ

Bernie Layne – partner at Mani, Ellis & Layne, PLLC and president of the West Virginia Association for Justice – is pushing for insurance changes to benefit injured victims during the 2014 legislative session.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Oct. 21, 2013 - PRLog -- Although West Virginia personal injury lawyer Bernie Layne began his term as President of the West Virginia Association for Justice in June, he is already preparing for the state’s 2014 legislative session. According to Layne, the WVAJ will be looking to place checks on insurance providers by prohibiting them from canceling policy holders when they are not at fault. Currently, insurance companies are able to cancel policies due to “acts of God.” With new legislation supported by Layne and the WVAJ, however, customers will be able to retain their policies in such events. Attorney Layne is also backing a proposal to raise auto insurance policy minimums. The current West Virginia auto insurance minimum – $20,000 – has not been changed since 1979.

Layne and the WVAJ is also focusing on protecting victims’ rights from lobbyists and special interest groups that aim to reduce rights of consumers and working West Virginians. Another item on the association’s agenda includes opposing a move to create an intermediate court of appeals – which is not necessary given the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals and will be a potential drain on resources and tax dollars.

Aside from working with lawmakers to protect the rights and well-being of injured victims, Layne is also using his position as president to find new ways for the association to become involved in and support the local communities. Having been deeply involved in charitable efforts with Mani, Ellis & Layne, PLLC and with organizations such as the New Lawyers’ Division, Layne’s genuine efforts to give back to the community are what has continually set him apart from other in the field. In June, Layne and Attorney Jon Mani presented the Covenant House in Charleston with $11,500 in donations.

. An experienced personal injury attorney who has dedicated his professional career to improving the lives of injured victims, their families, and other West Virginians in need, Layne has certainly found a role in which he can make positive changes.
