The strategic partnership agreement targets the application of ASTRI’s key on-going researches on communications technologies to ALCATEL ONETOUCH/TCL’s existing and future 4G product portfolio, as well as 5G standard development and future generation wireless products. The collaboration will focus on delivering the higher data rates (i.e. LTE advanced and beyond) and ad-hoc networking needed to create a holistic intelligent user experience. Research projects will focus on enabling ALCATEL ONETOUCH and TCL smart-device to deliver superior technology performance over competitor products, at the same time as bringing new value and services to consumers.

The agreement was signed by Dr. George Guo, CEO of TCL Communication, and Dr. Cheung Nim-kwan, CEO of ASTRI, and was witnessed by Mr. Li Dong-sheng, Chairman, TCL Communication, Mr. Chambers Wong, Consultant, TCL Communication; Mr. Wong Ming-yam, Chairman, ASTRI; and Miss Janet Wong, Commissioner for Innovation and Technology, HKSAR Government.

One of ASTRI’s main areas of focus is on developing world-class wireless technologies including reliable location positioning, determination and tracking functions for wireless networks; multiple channels in wireless devices within an area of coverage for efficient bandwidth deployment; busy tones for wireless networks; controlled access to a wireless medium to enhance network throughput; and an accurate channel quality indicator for linked adaptation in a Multiple-Input and Multiple-Output (MIMO) system. The application of these advanced technologies will enable TCL to create new value for customers and consumers and improve the competitiveness of its mobile product portfolio.

Dr. George Guo, Chief Executive Officer of TCL Communication, said, “We are delighted to have established this long-term, sustainable collaboration with ASTRI. This collaboration establishes a number of multi-year joint research programs, which will enable TCL and ASTRI to work together on upgrading the TCL Communication product roadmap within an accelerated timeframe. The application and deployment of TCL Communication product technology supported by this new cooperation on advanced research will speed up the integration of other smart home appliances to deliver a convenient and smart home lifestyle of the future.”

Dr. Cheung Nim-kwan, Chief Executive Officer of ASTRI, said, “The strategic partnership not only kicks off a long-term relationship between TCL Communication and ASTRI, but also illustrates the unique value of ASTRI’s position to industry. We expect ASTRI’s future R&D outputs will increasingly be applied to commercial products by our local partners such as TCL, thus enhancing the overall technology competitiveness of Hong Kong.”
