Raymond Lavine Warns of Dangers from Delayed Acquisition of Long Term Care Insurance

LOS ANGELES - Oct. 19, 2013 - PRLog -- Raymond Lavine of Lavine LTC Insurance discussed the dangers of delaying acquisition of long-term care insurance during an episode of "Moving America Forward" in Los Angeles. The discussion involved William Shatner, retired Admiral Kevin Delaney, and moderator Doug Llewellyn. The special episode of Moving America Forward discussed the importance of extended care benefits, also known as long-term care insurance (LTC).

LTC insurance is becoming more popular in the United States because, with increased life spans, people realize that even families with substantial assets would find it difficult to pay the cost of in-home care or those of residing in an assisted-living facility. Lavine pointed out, though, that many people hold the mistaken belief that long-term care is covered by their health insurance, Medicare, or Medicaid.

Health plans do not cover chronic care such as an extended stay in an assisted-living facility or nursing home, or the ongoing need for care giving at home. Lavine has first-hand knowledge of the dangers of not having long-term care insurance: He described to Doug Llewellyn how the family suffered when Lavine's father was disabled.

The Moving America Forward team reached out to Lavine because approximately 60 percent of individuals over age 65 will require some type of long-term care services during their lifetime. Surprisingly, some 40 percent of those receiving long-term care today are between 18 and 64. These are people who have been injured or who have a debilitating physical ailment or a cognitive disorder such as early-onset Alzheimer's.
