Woodbury University Student Team Wins Top Honors in National 24-Hour Animation Contest

‘The Last Meal’ Serves Up First Place for Five-Member Contingent

LOS ANGELES - Oct. 18, 2013 - PRLog -- LOS ANGELES (October 15, 2013) – While it may have been fast food, the “last meal” turned out to be a gourmet’s delight.

Woodbury University (www.woodbury.edu) announced today that a student team from its Animation Department placed first in the 24 HOURS Animation Contest, a national competition for students of animation.

The contest, hosted by California State University, Long Beach, required that students complete a 30-second animation within 24 hours, from concept through completion, around the theme, “What would you do if you had 24 hours to live?”  The five-member Woodbury team produced a short video called “The Last Meal.” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1AfXZnf9S5Q).

Held annually, the contest aims to help students simulate a real-life studio experience, working in groups under intense pressure to produce a polished final product. The Woodbury students behind the winning video included seniors Ryan Tengel, Andrew Bendik, Richard Ramos, Nicole Rola and junior Jasmine Silva.  Their production was one of 47 entries representing 11 schools across the nation.  Each video was judged by a panel of industry professionals according to set criteria: storytelling, art direction and animation, creativity and interpretation of theme, and level of completion.  The winning team was awarded five three-day passes to CTNX 2013, the Creative Talent Network’s annual animation expo, held yearly in Burbank, Calif., and one-year licenses for Toon Boom Storyboard Pro and Animate Pro.

“This is a tremendous accomplishment, a real world test of aptitude, expertise and, yes, fortitude,” said Dori Littell-Herrick, chair of the Animation Department within the School of Media, Culture & Design (MCD). “The team’s outstanding final submission is a testament to the creativity and dedication the department cultivates, both in terms of our students and our faculty.”

“All of MCD and Woodbury University benefits from the innovative ideas and exceptional technical skill of both our faculty and our students, and the Animation Department exemplifies that,” said Edward Clift, Dean of the School of Media, Culture & Design. “It’s enormously gratifying to see our students recognized for the talent we see every day.”
