IPSWICH, Mass. - Oct. 18, 2013 - PRLog -- Business Book Summary of Make Change Work

EBSCO Publishing has just released a new book summary. Escalating competition, advancing technology, and the struggle to remain relevant have made the ability to change a matter of survival. Companies that can identify, anticipate, and adapt to changing customer needs are the companies that win. Randy Pennington’s Make Change Work is a manual written by an experienced change leader for change leaders. Change can be a competitive advantage that allows organizations to be more nimble and relevant in today’s marketplace. He starts with the strategic side of change and shares ideas about what good change looks like and why change does not always work, moves to the tactical side of becoming a change leader and reveals strategies and competencies for increasing the effectiveness of change efforts, and then addresses specific challenges that present themselves when change is not a choice. Pennington concludes by looking at the future of change and the increasing pace and scope of it.

Randy Pennington offers readers the following advice:

·         The customers—both external and internal—are in charge. They want it faster, better, cheaper, and friendlier. Technology and globalization have given them that power, and they are not giving it back.

·         A good change is one in which those involved feel engaged, appreciated, and respected for their contributions, and it is one that achieves the desired result without causing residual damage to relationships or excessive strain on resources.

·         The dodo bird has become symbolic of lack of common sense, perpetual confusion, and the failure to adapt to a changing environment, while the coyote is the model of nimbleness and adaptability. The future belongs to the coyotes, and the dodos will become extinct.

·         Change management is different from change leadership. Change management is primarily a left-brained activity that seeks the shortest distance between two lines. Change leadership is decidedly a right-brained activity that takes a big-picture view and often takes a stroll or two around the block.

·         Buy-in occurs when most people involved in the change are actively working toward its success.

·         To build realistic optimists, leaders must be willing to go first; they should lead by example not by decree.

·         The most nimble leaders and organizations are guided more by the future than the past, and they change before they have to.

·         Generating creative tension causes people to take action and accomplish things that they ordinarily would consider impossible. Without resistance, there is no change.

·         To gain people’s commitment for change, leaders must connect with them where they are.

·         When it comes to successful change, people support what they help create and never argue with their own information and ideas.

·         The goal for all organizations that want to stay nimble and relevant is to understand what being the best means to them and to consciously choose that path rather than the easy one.

In addition to a 7-10 page summary of the book, each Business Book Summary includes a Key Concepts section that outlines the main points of the book, an About the Author section that informs readers of the author’s background as well as their additional written works, and a Features of the Book Section that explains the special features found within the book.
